Description

The Area Offices of Sunderland District Council, formerly known as Hetton House, are a house dating from the early to mid-18th century. The building is rendered with stone dressings and has a roof of Welsh slate. It is arranged over two storeys with a facade of 3, 2, and 5 windows. The main five-window section features sash windows within keystoned architraves with projecting sills. It has no street-facing entrance, a plinth, stone gable coping resting on curved kneelers, and two corniced brick chimneys. A two-bay wing to the left has a tripartite sash window on the left and a sash window on the right, both with glazing bars. A door is located on the right side of this wing, positioned under an oblong fanlight within a lugged architrave featuring a pulvinated frieze. The wing also has a plinth and a single brick chimney. A further three-bay wing to the left of this section incorporates three sash windows similar to those of the main house, a three-panelled door under an oblong fanlight within a lugged architrave, and a parapet to a flat roof.

The interior retains some architraves, deep panelled reveals to doors, dado rails, cornices and internal shutters. The staircase features two turned balusters per tread, moulded soffits, and has been altered, with an altered curtail, and contains an early 18th century door leading to stairs to the roof space.
