Description

The Minshull Vernon cum Leighton War Memorial is a First World War memorial from the 1920s, with the designer unknown. It is constructed from local red sandstone and is situated on two square stone steps. Above these steps, the memorial features a tapering, square obelisk.

Located on open land at the junction of Middlewich Road and Eardswick Lane, the memorial is surrounded by a small garden. The obelisk is divided into three stages by stone bands with cavetto mouldings and is made of regularly-coursed, rock-faced blocks. The middle stage does not taper and has panelled recesses with dressed margins on each face.

On the east face, there is a slate plaque with an incised and filled inscription that reads:

"PARISH OF/ LEIGHTON CUM/ MINSHULL VERNON/ IN GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO DIED/ FOR FREEDOM/ AND IN HONOUR/ OF ALL WHO SERVED/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ 1914 - 1918."

The west face features a similar plaque listing the twelve names of the fallen, without any military or other details.

The north and south faces have plaques inscribed with memorials to RAF crews who died in the parish. The south face commemorates those who died on 4th February 1941 on Wellington R1298, listing ten names. The north face honors those who died on 20th March 1943 on Wellington X3547, listing eight names, and also mentions those who died on Oxford DF477, with four names.

At the bottom of the east face, there is a quarter-spherical stone basin that holds the remains of a metal drinking fountain above.
