Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built between 1847 and 1849 by John Matthews. It features rock-faced masonry and a steep slate roof, designed in the Lancet style typical of Commissioners' Churches. The church has a four-bay nave that is wider than the narrower, less lofty chancel. Asymmetrical projections on the north and south sides between the nave and chancel house the organ chamber and a small vestry, respectively. The exterior includes a projecting moulded plinth, corner and inter-window buttresses that reduce at sill level, and a moulded sill band. The windows are mainly lancets with hood moulds, generally paired, though three in the chancel gable contain stained glass. A Gothic porch at the north end of the west nave features an entrance flanked by single shafts. The church also has a coved eaves cornice, coping on the gables, and a twin bell-cote with a single bell. A modern vestry has been added to the nave gable but is of no particular interest.

Inside, the chancel is flanked by choir stalls with poppyheads and an organ. The nave benches are similar in style. Notable features include an eagle lectern with a crocketted pinnacle base, trefoil-headed sedilia on the north wall of the chancel, and an oak pulpit with a stone base accessed from the vestry. The moulded sanctuary arch is supported by three coupled shafts. The nave roof has hammer beam arched trusses with curved braces above a high collar, exposed rafters, and boarded soffits, while the chancel roof features braced collared rafters. An oak-framed war memorial with a gilded crucifix is also present.
