Description
The Shropshire Union Canal Aqueduct over the River Weaver, built between 1827 and 1833, is a notable structure designed by Thomas Telford. It is constructed from brick and features stone bands and copings. The aqueduct has a large circular arch, which is flanked by smaller flood relief arches. There are roll-moulded stone bands that run through the central arch vault at the springing level. The arches are supported by single piers that include plain, round-headed brick niches. The curving wing walls of the aqueduct terminate in newels.
