Description
The war memorial, located west of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Thorpe Hesley, was built in 1920 and designed by Tyas and Guest of Swinton. It is made of ashlar sandstone and features iron railings. The memorial is enclosed by a square area with low railings and includes four artillery shells placed around it. At its center stands a stylized, square-sectioned Doric column with a plinth that reads, "ERECTED BY / THE GRATEFUL INHABITANTS / OF THIS PARISH." The column's shaft lists the names of local men who lost their lives in both World Wars. At the top, there is an entablature that supports a near-life-size statue of an infantryman holding a gun and facing to the left.
