Description

Nos 41 and 43, together with attached outbuildings, form two dwellings with associated farm buildings. The core of the structure dates from the late 15th to early 16th century, with later alterations and a 19th-century addition. The building is constructed of timber framing, rubble sandstone and brick walling, largely cement-rendered, with 20th-century cement tile roofs; the rear barn retains old pantiles. The layout is U-shaped, with a domestic range fronting the road and farm buildings attached to the rear left, linking to a barn. Generally, the building is two storeys high.

No. 43 comprises three timber-framed bays with a 19th-century one-bay house added to the left (No. 41). The front of No. 43 exhibits wall posts marking the bay divisions, with the walling set back at first-floor level. There is a 20th-century porch to the left of the second bay, along with irregular 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The roof is hipped, with a gablet to the right end, and features renewed brick ridge stacks at the junction of bays 2 and 3, and where it abuts the adjacent house. The right return side reveals exposed corner wall posts on padstones, with a casement beneath the mid-rail and long braces to the tie beam. No. 41 has a 20th-century French window below a casement, and a stone porch to the left return. The link block connecting the two houses has a courtyard front with a stable door to the left of a large opening with a wood lintel, alongside various casements and slatted openings to the first floor. External steps lead to the rear right, at the angle with the barn.

The barn is timber-framed and has exposed wall posts on three corners and flanking the central bay. The courtyard side features a near-central door beneath the mid-rail and a large sliding door to the right bay. The eaves of the pantile roof are covered with stone slates.

The interior of No. 43 retains key elements of the original three-bay house. A detailed study suggests the house originally featured a central open hall with a smokehood and a stone reredos wall backing onto a cross-passage. A chamfer-stopped 17th-century fireplace has been inserted in the position of the smokehood. Bay 1 contains a rare survival of a late medieval staircase consisting of halved, squared balks fixed to steeply-inclined timbers to form treads (some treads have been renewed). The roof is of a collared common-rafter design. The barn features curved braces to the tie beam of one internal truss. The framing is similar to that of No. 43, and the roof has been reconstructed to a lower pitch, retaining rafters with collar halvings. No. 43 now includes a cottage previously listed as No. 45. Tree-ring analysis of timber from No. 43 has established a date of around 1495.
