Description
Throckley War Memorial is a First World War memorial, sculpted in 1921 by Messrs Emley of Newcastle. It is made of polished Aberdeen red granite on a freestone base. The memorial is a square, slightly tapering monument located at the intersection of two main roads, just outside the parish church. It features a square column that stands on a three-stepped pedestal, which is set upon a concrete base. At the top of the column is a fluted dome that bears an urn.
The lettering on the memorial is incised and painted gold, using sans serif capitals throughout, except for the quotation, which is in plain italic capitals. The dedication is carved on the front, west side, with the dates 1914 and 1919 at the top, flanked by an incised laurel wreath. The dedication reads:
1914 1919/ IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THROCKLEY/ WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR./ THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US/ LET US TRY TO BE WORTHY/ OF THE SACRIFICE/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ JOHN XV 13
The names of the 56 fallen soldiers are listed in alphabetical order in single columns on the north and south sides of the memorial.
