Description

This is a house, now divided into three separate dwellings, located in Walbottle. The main part of the building dates to the early 18th century, with a later 18th-century wing added to the rear. Significant alterations were made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed of coursed rubble with a pebbledashed finish, topped with a graduated green slate roof. It has stone gable copings with curved kneelers, and yellow brick chimneys. The rear wing is of red brick and has a hipped roof. The main house has two storeys and five bays, which are slightly irregular in arrangement. A 20th-century glazed door with overlight and cross-casement windows are visible. Chimneys are located at the ends and off-centre. A 19th-century pent roof extension is on the left side. The rear wing, possibly originally a stable, is two storeys high and has four bays, arranged very irregularly. It features a ridged, boarded door with an overlight and 19th and early 20th-century casement windows, two of which have been inserted into original openings with gauged brick arches. A pointed-arched first-floor window with Y tracery is also present. A round-arched window with a stone surround, keystone, impost blocks, and radial glazing bars is on the rear elevation. A 20th-century brick extension is of minimal architectural interest. Inside, a closed-string dog-leg staircase has stout turned balusters and a square moulded handrail. Three early 19th-century fireplaces, complete with grates, remain, along with a room containing a cornice from the same period.
