Description
Whickham Riding School is a mid-18th century farmhouse located on the north side of Whickham Highway in Whickham. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a pantiled roof with flat stone gable coping and two corniced brick chimneys at the ends. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys high with three windows. A 20th-century porch leads to a central glazed door, and the windows are sash style with glazing bars set in painted raised stone surrounds. There is a band at the first floor level, and the return gable peaks include two semi-circular single-stone louvred openings. The double-span roof of the rear wing has two end brick corniced chimneys. Inside, the building features a heck post, screen, and settle by the fireside, a ladder stair in the kitchen of the rear wing, and plank doors leading to the first-floor rooms. The chimney piece in the left bedroom is adorned with a pulvinated frieze and cornice.
