Description

Nos. 11 and 13 on Front Street are two houses that have been combined into one. They date from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a later rear wing added. The first house on the right is rendered, while the second, taller house features ashlar sandstone and brick at the rear with quoins. Both houses have steeply-pitched pantiled roofs with flat stone gable copings on curved kneelers. There is one brick chimney at the right end and two corniced brick chimneys on the left side.

The building is L-shaped and has two storeys. The older part on the right has three irregularly spaced sash windows with splayed stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The newer part has two storeys and three windows, with a six-panelled door in the third bay beneath a three-paned oblong fanlight, all set within an architrave that features a frieze and cornice. The sash windows in this section also have glazing bars, flat stone lintels, and projecting stone sills. The left return has 18th-century attic sash windows with broad glazing bars, an eaves string, and a corniced parapet.

Inside the front range of the first build, there are indications that it may be the older section, featuring early 18th-century doors and a chimney piece. A wide enclosed staircase with two handrails of early 18th-century design leads to a transverse passage at the rear left. The ground floor of the first bay contains a kitchen chimney with an original spiral stair behind it, which has since been removed. There is also a wide elliptical-headed blocked door between the second and third windows of the first build, which is now enclosed in a cupboard.
