Description

The Whickham War Memorial stands in a paved area at the junction of Church Green and Front Street, near several other listed buildings, including 20 Front Street and the Church of St Mary. Constructed in the 1920s, the memorial is built of Creetown Granite and stands approximately 4 metres tall. It takes the form of a corniced wall with a central, semi-circular pediment, raised on a two-stage base; the lower stage is roughly hewn. The whole monument sits on a low step and rectangular platform.

The central section of the wall, set beneath the pediment, projects slightly both to the front and rear. A cross is carved in low relief to the front, above a scroll that bears the principal dedication: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THE/ VILLAGE OF WHICKHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919./ THEY DIED FOR LIBERTY AND/ HONOUR." Below this, the inscription continues with "SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945 with, below that, LEST WE FORGET."

The names of those commemorated from the First World War are recorded on the front face of the wall, to either side of the central section, with seven names listed on the south-east face. Carved in low relief at the top of the wall sides are wreaths. To the rear, a wreath is carved in low relief at the top of the central section, with a reversed sword below. The Second World War names are recorded to the rear, either side of the central section. A foundation stone inscription on the rear of the base records that the memorial was founded on 1st April 1922 and unveiled on 19th August 1922, by Colonel R.H. Carr Ellison C.M.G.
