Description
The stables north of Dunston Hill Hospital were built in the late 18th to early 19th century. The building features two central bays made of ashlar stone, while the rest is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, accented with ashlar dressings and quoins, and has a plinth. The roof is made of Lakeland slate and has flat stone gable coping on square kneelers. The structure is in an L-plan layout, consisting of a two-storey, two-bay center, with one-storey sections on either side and a one-storey two-bay wing that projects forward on the left. The central gable includes two segmental-headed carriage entrances below small square windows with a sill band, and there is a painted clock dial set in a stone surround at the peak of the gable. A square louvred bell cote is also present. The one-storey sections on either side feature two high round-headed doors, and there is a square-headed stair entrance to the left of the gable. The left wing that extends forward has an outer stair leading to a loft door. All windows and doors, except for the carriage entrances, have raised stone surrounds.
