Description

The Dunston Hill War Memorial is a granite structure located prominently at the junction of Ellison Road and King George Avenue. It features a tall, ornate Celtic cross with wheel-head arms, and both the front and rear faces of the shaft are adorned with intricate interlace patterns carved in relief. The shaft is elevated on a square plinth with chamfered corners, which in turn rests on a five-stepped octagonal base, placed on a three-stepped area of paving.

Each face of the plinth is divided into vertical panels that display inscriptions and names. Bronze lettering at the base of the shaft states "THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." A bronze plaque on the central panel of the front face of the plinth reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ THESE LAID THE/ WORLD AWAY/ POURED OUT THE/ RED SWEET WINE/ OF YOUTH GAVE/ UP THE YEARS TO/ BE OF WORK AND/ JOY AND THAT/ UNHOPED SERENE/ THAT MEN CALL/ AGE," with a wreath and palm fronds in relief decorating the bottom of the plaque.

Below this plaque, on the sloping face of the plinth base, is the inscription "REMEMBER ALSO/ THOSE WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN/ WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945." Recessed panels on either side of the bronze plaque, as well as on the other three sides of the plinth, list the names of those who served in the First World War in carved and painted lettering. The names of those from the Second World War are carved and painted on the sloping face of the plinth base.
