Description
The Seaton Delaval War Memorial is located in a garden on the north side of Elsdon Avenue. Made from Creetown granite, it stands approximately 6.5 meters tall and features a small Latin cross atop a tapering, buttressed shaft. The shaft rises from a moulded pedestal, which is decorated on each side with carved wreaths suspended from ribbons. This pedestal sits on the corniced top of a plinth, which is supported by a four-stepped base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "FOR THE MOTHERLAND/ 1914 - 1918/ THESE MEN OF OURS, AT THE/ CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO/ THEM, ENDURED HARDNESS,/ FACED DANGER, AND FINALLY/ PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF/ MEN, BY THE PATH OF DUTY/ AND SELF-SACRIFICE; GIV-/ ING UP THEIR OWN LIVES/ THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN/ FREEDOM./ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER/ SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES/ ARE NOT FORGOTTEN." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are inscribed on the other three faces of the memorial.
A dedication for the Second World War is found on the tread of the upper-most step, stating: "TO THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ 1939 – 1945," with the names of the commemorated individuals listed on the risers of the step.
