Description

The Hailsham War Memorial is a tribute to those who served in the First and Second World Wars, erected in 1920 with an additional plaque added in 1949.

Constructed from Cornish granite, the memorial stands 4 meters tall and features a Celtic cross with a triquetra carved in relief on its arms. The east and west faces of the shaft display an interlace pattern in relief, extending from the plinth to the base of the cross. The tapering plinth has cyclopean rustication at each corner and is set on four rough-hewn granite steps.

On the west face, the memorial is inscribed with the years 1914 and 1919, along with a dedication to the men of Hailsham who lost their lives in the Great War, stating, "Their name liveth for evermore." The other three faces of the plinth list the names of the fallen.

A rectangular commemorative stone slab is positioned on the steps at the west face, surrounded by a shallow iron railing. This slab is inscribed with the years 1939 and 1945 and honors the brave sons of Hailsham who died in the Second World War, stating, "We shall always remember."

The memorial is located on the High Street, set back from the road in front of a row of shops, and is enclosed by a small wall that was not present at the time of its erection.
