Description

The lamp standard outside Avenue House is a late 19th-century structure made by the Webb Lamp Company Limited of Birmingham. It is constructed from cast iron and features a moulded base, a fluted shaft with a swept foot, ladder rests, and a circular head topped with a domed cover. The base has plates that display the maker's name and the inscription 'J.E. WEBBS PATENT SEWER GAS DESTRUCTOR'. This lamp was originally designed to use methane from sewers before coal gas became available.
