Description
This is a sewer gas lamp located outside 21 Hartley Square, dating from the late 19th century. It was made by the Webb Lamp Company Limited of Birmingham and is constructed from cast iron. The lamp features a moulded base, a fluted shaft with a swept foot, ladder rests, and a circular head topped with a domed cover and finial. The base has plates displaying the maker's name and the inscription "J E WEBBS PATENT SEWER GAS DESTRUCTOR." This lamp was originally designed to use methane from sewers before coal gas became widely available.
