Description

The Seaton Sluice and Old Hartley War Memorial is located on the Green, near the junction of Collywell Bay Road and West Terrace. It features a simple Latin cross atop a square column, which rises from a pedestal with a pediment. The pedestal is set on a stepped base and is surrounded by a low stone kerb and railings, with a gate on the west side.

The column has a cornice that includes dentils on the bed-moulding. Below the cornice, the shaft of the column is adorned with festoons of oak leaves carved in low relief, and a wreath is carved on each face at the base of the column shaft. Each pediment of the pedestal has an acroterion at its apex, and the frieze below features a repeating interlace pattern with carved flower-heads. The pedestal has inscriptions incised into each face.

On the west face, the inscription reads: "TO THE HONOUR OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SEATON SLUICE AND OLD HARTLEY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 AND THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." The north face states: "IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 202 MEN FROM THE DISTRICT RESPONDED TO THE COUNTRY'S CALL, 23 MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE. IN THE WORLD WAR OVER 200 MEN AND WOMEN SERVED AND 27 MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE. ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION." The east face lists 27 names from 1939 – 1945, while the south face lists 23 names from 1914 – 1919.

It is noted that the modern railings and gate enclosing the memorial cross are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
