Description

The Great Somerford War Memorial Cross is located in a small grassed area at the junction of Top Street, Hollow Street, and Park Lane, and is overlooked by The Close and The Old Maltings, both of which are Grade II-listed.

This stone memorial stands approximately 4.2 meters high and features a small floriated Latin cross atop a tall octagonal shaft. The shaft is mounted on a small square plinth with a two-stepped base. The entire structure rests on a square slab that is flush with the ground and surrounded by a lawn. The grassed area is bordered by low bollards connected by chains.

The main inscription is located on the east-facing side of the plinth, where applied metal lettering states "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ (13 NAMES)/ 1914 – 1918." On the west-facing side, there is an additional inscription that reads "IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION/ ALSO OF/ ALL FROM OUR VILLAGE/ WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR."

Names of those who fell in the Second World War have been added to the south-facing side of the plinth, with an inscription that reads "1939 – 1945/ (5 NAMES)."
