Description

The former parish school, now used as workshops, was built in 1818. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, featuring large quoins and ashlar dressings, and has a low-pitched Welsh slate roof with flat stone gable copings. The building is single-storey and has eight bays. In the eighth bay, there is a recessed four-panelled door set under a stone lintel. All bays contain round-section mullioned and transomed windows, with those in the second, fourth, and sixth bays located under gabled dormers that break the eaves. Each window has flat stone sills, irregular-block jambs, and wood lintels. On the right side of the building, there are long windows beneath the inscription "ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION, ANNO DOMINI, 1818. THE HON. AND REV. EDWARD GREY, RECTOR." Notably, the subscribers included the Bishop of Durham and the trustees of Lord Crewe, as recorded in W. Bourn's "Annals of the Parish of Whickham," published in 1892.
