Description
Hallstile Cottages, also known as Henry King Memorial Almshouses, date back to around 1391. Originally five cottages, they have been converted into three. The building has an 'L' plan, with No 1's east end being more prominent, while Nos 2 and 3 face south. It is a single-storey structure with slate roofs and is constructed from dressed coursed rubble with ashlar quoins.
No 1 features a central porch with a coped gable and kneelers, leading to a doorway with a four-centred arch and moulded jambs. Above the door is a label containing two blank escutcheons. Flanking the porch are two light casement windows. On the south side, there is a two-light transomed window with a pediment, above which is a tablet in a moulded frame that reads "In Memoriam Henry King qui obiit 1891". The gables are coped, and the slate roof has ball finials.
Nos 2 and 3 have central doorways with four-centred arches and labels above containing blank escutcheons. These doorways are flanked by four-light bays with half-timbered gables and glazing bar casements, featuring two-leaf panelled doors.
The Henry King Almshouses are part of a group of buildings.
