Description
John Brabin's Almshouses are two cottages that were formerly three almshouses, built in the late 17th century and altered over time. They are constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a stone slate roof, standing two storeys high. The facade features three chamfered door surrounds with triangular heads. Each window consists of two lights with a mullion. To the right of the left-hand door, there is a window on each floor; the ground-floor window has a plain stone head with rebated and chamfered jambs and a chamfered mullion, while the first-floor window has a plain stone surround and a square mullion. Similar details are found in the windows to the right of the middle door. The right-hand door has a window to its left on each floor, both with plain stone surrounds and square mullions. The chimneys, likely added in the late 19th or 20th century, are made of rock-faced stone and are located on each side of the central bay. On the first floor of the right-hand gable, there is a sandstone plaque with a moulded border that is carved with 'JOHN BRABIN 1684'.
