Description

John Brabin's Old School is a former school building dating from 1684, which has been altered over time. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building stands two storeys tall, with the upper storey being notably high. It has three bays and a central single-storey porch. A continuous drip course runs along the front and returns along the right-hand gable wall, while the eaves cornice is cavetto-moulded.

On the ground floor, there are two three-light double-chamfered mullioned windows, with the inner chamfer being hollow. The first-floor windows are framed with chamfered plain stone surrounds. The porch has an ashlar front and saddle-backed coping adorned with three ball finials. It features a studded plank door and a worn moulded door surround with a shaped lintel and moulded hood. The lintel is re-cut with the inscription 'CP RP 1684 JH RM'. Above the porch is a re-cut plaque with a moulded border that reads, 'THIS SCHOOL FOUNDED BY JOHN BRABBIN GENTLEMAN DOCE DISCE VEL DISCEDE'.

On the left-hand gable, there is a plain stone door surround with the word 'GIRLS' inscribed on the lintel. The right-hand gable features a three-light double-chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor. At the rear of the building, which faces northwest, there are extensions topped with an M-roof. The wall facing the river is two storeys high and has three bays, with windows that have plain stone surrounds. The wall facing the road contains four narrow doorways with slightly chamfered surrounds, which have been blocked to form windows. The right-hand doorway has '1771' incised on the lintel. Above these doorways are first and second-floor windows with plain stone surrounds, along with a cavetto cornice.
