Description
Banksea Cottages are former almshouses that have been converted into two cottages. They date back to the 16th century but are believed to have medieval origins. The buildings have undergone significant alterations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are constructed from thin coursed rubble with double Roman tiles on the roof and chimneys. The structure is rectangular and features a large stepped chimney at the rear, which has been reduced to the eaves. There is also a section of stonework at the rear that may indicate the site of an additional chimney. The cottages are two storeys high and have three windows on the first floor, with irregular two- and three-light casements. On the ground floor, there are three doorways with wooden lintels; two of these are taller and have transom lights, while one doorway is blocked. The doors are ledge and batten style. The interior has not been seen, but it is reported that the current roof covers an earlier thatched roof. At the time of the survey, the cottages were in poor condition.
