Description

Gervinia Cottage is a detached house dating from the 17th century. It has a two-room cross-passage plan with a full-width outshut beneath a catslide roof. The exterior is rendered, with brick stacks and a double Roman tile roof. The house has two storeys and three windows, featuring two-light horizontal bar wood casements, with a three-light casement on the ground floor to the right. A part-glazed door from the 20th century is situated to the left of the central first-floor window. The gables are plain, with brick stacks. A projecting bread oven with a pantile roof is located to the right of the three-light casement. The rear elevation has two- and five-light shallow casements and a plank door.

Inside, the ground floor retains two transverse, deeply chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A later staircase has been inserted, but there is evidence of a former winder stair near the ingle-nook fireplace. The roof is a reported 19th-century replacement, and the outshut may have been added at that time, as the inner wall features a doorway opposite the main entry to the cross passage.
