Description

This milestone, located 440 metres east of Portgate roundabout, is likely from around 1757, which is the date when the turnpike opened. It is made of sandstone and stands 0.60 metres high. The stone has a segmental top and features incised figures indicating the distance of 16 miles to Newcastle.
