Description

Halton Church is a church that dates from the 12th and 16th centuries. It is constructed of random rubble with a Welsh slate roof and consists of a nave, chancel, and west vestry. The church features medieval masonry, but all external details are from the 16th century. The three-bay nave has a south door with a segmental-arched, roll-moulded surround. To the right of this door are two two-light windows with round heads.

The chancel is one bay and has a similar window, along with a five-light east window that is set under a hoodmould. The church has an embattled parapet and a gabled west bellcote with a round-arched opening, topped by a gabled roof.

Inside, there is an unmoulded 12th-century chancel arch with plain chamfered imposts. The rere-arch of the east window is carved with symbols, possibly initials. The shallow-pitched roof features massive old tie beams with very short king and queen posts, likely from around 1400. The altar rails are from the 18th century, while the stone altar from the 17th century has heavily-rusticated round arches. The nave dado is made of 18th-century panelling, which was probably reused from box pews.
