Description
The Fox and Hounds Inn is an 18th-century inn that was heightened and extended in the early 19th century, with further extensions made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble with cut dressings and features a stone slate roof, except for the south bay and south-east wing, which have Welsh slates. The building stands two storeys tall and has four bays, with raised quoins.
The original three-bay section on the right includes a central half-glazed door set in a raised alternating-block surround, along with 12-pane sash windows, although the lower panes have been altered for rotary vents. There is a Victorian wall post-box on the far right. The left bay, added in the early 19th century, also has 12-pane sash windows. The left end stack has been rebuilt, while the right end stack is stepped and corniced.
The 20th-century south-west wing is not considered of special interest. The inn has historical connections to the ancient Stagshaw Bank Cattle Fair, which was previously held on the moorland immediately to the west.
