Description
Portgate House is an early 19th-century house located in Corbridge. It is constructed of coursed roughly-squared stone, featuring tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The south gable front has two storeys plus an attic and consists of three bays. Access is gained by climbing eight steps to a central six-panel door with a two-pane overlight, set within an alternating-block surround. Flanking the door are 16-pane sash windows, with 12-pane sashes above them, all within moulded boxes and slightly-projecting sills. The attic features a central round window with radial glazing, set in a raised stone surround. The gable is coped, and there is a central cross-axial stepped stack on each roof slope, with the one on the right partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The rear elevation is similar to the front but includes a central porch with a part-slatted window and a boarded door on the left return, topped with a hipped roof.
Inside, the house retains a contemporary interior with fireplaces and a kitchen range, six-panel doors, and a main dogleg stair featuring stick balusters and a moulded handrail.
