Description
The Chapel of St Aidan, built in 1885 by W.S. Hicks for John Straker, is a chapel constructed from squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. It has an aisleless three-bay nave, a south porch, and a south-west bell turret, along with a two-bay chancel that includes a north vestry and an organ chamber. The design is in the Free Perpendicular style.
Notable architectural features include a chamfered plinth, a set-back moulded sill string, and an eaves cornice supported by corbels. The chapel has stepped buttresses and features two- and three-light windows. The gabled south porch contains panelled double doors set under a moulded arch adorned with square flower ornament. The octagonal bell turret is characterized by shallow buttresses on alternating faces, chamfered loops leading to the newel stair, traceried single-light bell openings, an embattled parapet, and a stone spire topped with a weathervane. On the south side of the chancel, there is a moulded panel featuring the IHS and Emblems of Passion, while the gables are finished with moulded coping and foliate cross finials.
Inside, the chapel boasts a moulded chancel arch with foliage-carved capitals and a segmental arch with square flower ornament leading to the organ chamber. The chancel includes a piscina and sedilia. The interior is rich in woodwork, featuring arch-braced collar-beam roofs, a carved wallplate with a foliage cornice, and a richly-carved font. The dado is panelled and brattished, with linenfold bench ends. Additional carved elements include the pulpit, lectern, stalls, and communion rail, while the chancel floor is laid with mosaic.
