Description

The stable block, dating from the early 18th century and rebuilt in 1779, is located approximately 60 yards north-west of Close House in Heddon-on-the-Wall. Constructed of ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the rear is partly rebuilt in old brick. The building features three ranges surrounding a courtyard, with a low wall and gateway closing off the south side. It is two storeys high, with the older six-bay rear range showcasing a chamfered plinth and rusticated quoins. The doorways in the second and fifth bays have 'Gibbs' surrounds, and there are four-pane windows in raised surrounds. A wall clock is positioned in the centre of this range.

The symmetrical side ranges are identical, with a flat-topped plinth and no quoins. Each side range has six bays, featuring two segmental-arched carriage doors in the central bays, with oeil-de-boeuf windows above the junction of the arches, flanked by cruciform slits. The outer bays contain doors and windows in raised surrounds. The roofs are hipped, and there is a louvred bell turret located in the centre of the rear range.

On the south side of the yard, there is a low ashlar wall with flat coping, interrupted in the centre by a gateway supported by square rusticated piers.
