Description

The stable block, built around 1800, is located 30 metres north-east of Styford Hall. It is constructed of stone, featuring a pebbledashed front with raised quoins and dressings, while the rear is made of rubble with cut dressings. The roof is made of Lakeland slate. The building is arranged in single-storey ranges around a yard that is open to the south.

The north range consists of three wide bays. The central bay, which slightly projects, serves as the coachhouse and has a pair of 3-centred arches along with a 12-pane fixed window set under a round arch in the pediment. At the ridge behind, there is a clock tower with a set-back second stage that features Tuscan columns flanking the clock face and an entablature. Above this, an octagonal cupola with turned wooden columns supports a lead dome topped with a weathervane. The left bay contains flush-panelled double doors with a 3-pane overlight and a 12-pane sash window, while the right bay has a boarded door with a 3-pane overlight and a 12-pane casement.

Each side range includes a blocked 3-centred arch with an inserted 12-pane sash window at the south end. The east range features flush-panelled double doors beneath a 3-pane overlight, a renewed 12-pane sash window, and 20th-century sliding doors. The west range has vertical-panelled and boarded double doors, each with a 3-pane overlight, and a 12-pane sash window situated between them. Both side ranges have hipped roofs.

Inside, the coachhouse is notable for its broad central pier with a round-headed arch.
