Description

The Stationmaster's House at Riding Mill Station, built around 1832 with a taller rear block added in the mid-19th century, is possibly designed by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. It features tooled-and-margined stone with dressings and a slate roof, along with a chamfered plinth.

The north elevation, which faces the platform, is one storey plus an attic and is divided into two sections. The right part has three bays, with a renewed door to the right and tall two-light mullioned windows featuring renewed 12-pane sashes. Above the center window, there is an inserted dormer supported by corbels, which contains a two-light window and a steep coped gable with moulded kneelers and a block finial. The end gables are coped and have stacks with twin octagonal shafts. A Victorian letter box is located between the door and the center window. The left gabled bay has a renewed door and a two-light window to the right, along with a coped gable. All openings have chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds.

The rear elevation has two storeys and two bays, featuring an off-centre renewed door in a chamfered surround and late 19th-century four-pane sashes.
