Description

This road bridge over the railway was built around 1832 and designed by engineer Francis Giles. It is constructed from dressed stone featuring channeled rustication, except for the tooled-and-margined stone parapets. The bridge has a segmental skew arch with a band located below the parapet, which is flat-coped and has a chamfered set-back. The flat-coped wing walls have a double-stepped plinth that slopes down to low piers topped with flattened pyramidal caps. The bridge was built for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway.
