Description
The Broomhaugh and Riding Mill War Memorial is located on the southern side of the cemetery. It is a wheel-head cross approximately 4.5 meters tall, made of sandstone from the Windy Nook quarries. The front face of the cross head features interlace patterns carved in relief. The foot of the cross shaft is set upon a tapering pedestal, which itself stands on a two-stepped base. At the rear, there is a short, curving low coped brick wall.
The main dedicatory inscription is on a bronze plaque attached to the front face of the pedestal, which reads: "1914-1918/ REMEMBER WITH HONOUR/ THOSE WHO BY THEIR DEATH/ HAVE ENNOBLED THIS VILLAGE./ (NAMES)." A rectangular bronze plaque on the riser of the top step commemorates those who served in the Second World War. Both plaques are adorned with interlace decoration included in the castings.
