Description
The Station House is a former station-master's house, built around 1836, with late 19th-century additions at the rear. It is possibly designed by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company. The building features tooled-and-margined ashlar stonework and has a Welsh slate roof with ashlar chimneys. It has a T-plan layout, consisting of a two-storey, one-bay block and a single-storey, three-bay wing that extends at right angles across the rear.
The architectural style is Tudor, characterized by chamfered plinths and a variety of window types, including single-light and two-light windows in chamfered surrounds, some of which have hoodmoulds, while others are blocked or have replaced sashes. The two-storey block has a gable front with a small canted oriel window on the first floor and a steeply-pitched roof featuring coped gables with shaped kneelers and a finial at the apex. A cross-axial chimney with three cylindrical stacks is located at the rear end of this block.
The single-storey wing at the rear has similar roof details and a central cross-axial chimney with two cylindrical stacks. Access is provided through a doorway on the right side of the rear. There is also a later 19th-century one-bay addition on the left side of the rear, along with later lean-to additions that are not of special interest.
