Description
Close House Lodge and Gateway is a lodge, gatepiers, screen walls, and railings built in the early 19th century and early 20th century. It is constructed of ashlar and iron, topped with a Lakeland slate roof.
The structure features octagonal rusticated gatepiers with widely-projecting cornices and ball finials. These are flanked by short stretches of low walling with plain railings. Beyond these, there are serpentine walls approximately 6 feet high with rounded coping and pilasters. Similar but lower walls extend along the road for about 40 yards in each direction, ending in square corniced piers.
To the left of the gateway, the wall is interrupted by the end wall of the later lodge. This single-storey lodge has three bays by one bay, with raised alternating quoins. It features a central stone porch with pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course, flanked by canted bay windows that have stone pent roofs. The lodge has twin gables with large obliquely-set modillions and moulded coping, and a corniced ridge stack. On the left return, which breaks into the serpentine wall to the left of the gateway, there is a 20th-century window in a raised alternating-block surround under a similar gable.
