Description
Rudchester is a house with a late 13th-century core, significantly remodelled and extended in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of dressed stone with a plinth and has a Welsh slate roof. The house follows an L-shaped plan, with later buildings filling the re-entrant angle and displaying a Gothick style.
The front facade is two storeys high and has four bays, featuring a half-glazed, Tudor-arched door with Gothick tracery in a moulded surround, with quatrefoils in the corner blocks and a cornice above. Pointed-arched windows with intersecting glazing bars are present, with those on the ground floor set in raised surrounds. A small 14th-century window, with a cusped ogee head, is located on the first floor to the left of the front door. The roof is hipped, with banded ridge stacks.
The left return side has three bays, displaying pointed-arched windows with intersecting glazing bars in raised surrounds with roll-moulded edges. The centre bay features blank panels contained within similar surrounds.
The interior reveals that the walls of the rooms in the southeastern corner are approximately 5 feet thick, indicating a former tower within that section. Remnants of the tower's parapet and a stone water spout remain in the roof space. On the ground floor, a large fireplace is present with a moulded surround, the lintel carved with two shields and two crocketed swags. The first floor contains a 13th or 14th-century window embrasure with a Caernarvon lintel. Thick walls extend westward from the tower. The house features six-panel doors and shutters. The dining room's fireplace has an early 19th-century fluted surround, with a mantel shelf supported by turned and fluted columns. A staircase incorporates stick balusters.
