Description

19 and 19A St Mary's Chare is a late 17th century to early 18th century building that stands two storeys high with an attic, featuring five windows. The structure is made of stone with a rendered front and has chamfered quoins on the left side. It has a coped gable with a kneeler. The first floor has late glazed sash windows that are adorned with moulded labels and reveals, although the right-hand window is disintegrating. There are three half dormers with coped gables and moulded labels; two of these have sash windows, while the right dormer retains a two-light mullion window.

On the ground floor, there are two doorways: a central passageway with a fine architrave and a pulvinated frieze leading to an entablature, and a similar doorway to the right. The building features two shop fronts for Nos 19 and 19A. The south return has two attic openings with raised surrounds and three extensions at irregular levels. There are traces of two-light mullioned windows on this return and at the rear of the main part of the house. A stepped chimney stack indicates the building's former use as a forge.

Nos 1 to 19A (odd) along with Nos 2 to 8 (even) and Nos 16 to 20 (even) and No 4 Meal Market form a group, with No 1 being of local interest.
