Description

No. 4 St Mary’s Street is an early 18th-century building situated on the north side of the street. It is constructed of coursed rubble with stone rusticated quoins and window dressings. The building has a Mansard roof of stone slates, finished with two brick chimneys at the gable ends. There are two dormers, each with double-hung sash windows containing glazing bars. The upper floors feature three windows, all set within rusticated surrounds and with double-hung sashes and glazing bars. A fine early 19th-century shop front is the prominent feature at street level, with two bowed windows flanking a central double shop door. Above the door is a semi-circular glazed fanlight set within a rectangular reveal. The shop front is further ornamented with panelled divisions, an ornamented frieze with flutes, and a moulded cornice that projects forward over the shop. Access to the shop is via three steps. A modern window has been inserted into the ground floor on the left-hand side. The building is part of a group with Nos. 2 to 26, St Mary's Street.
