Description
Fandango's Club, located at 17 and 17A St Mary's Chare, is a building dating from the 17th century, with 18th and 19th century decorations on the front. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring four windows. The front is made of rendered stone with chamfered quoins, and the slate roof has ornamental kneelers that support carved cubes. The windows are glazing bar sash types with raised surrounds and broken segmental pediments adorned with rosettes. There are four dormers with shaped gables, likely from the 19th century, and two-light mullioned casements. A foiled panel is present on the ground floor to the left, and there is a segmental coach arch to the left of the center that leads to a yard. The back archway to the yard shows traces of bolection mouldings. At the rear, there are two gabled extensions of different depths, with kneelers at the verges. The south elevation features three gabled dormers with two-light mullioned windows and kneelers, along with a similar dormer on the west side. The south elevation also has three two-light mullioned windows and later windows, one of which is blocked, with buck dressings. Inside No 17A, there is a very solid 17th century oak staircase with turned balusters, uncut strings, and heavy newels topped with finials. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 19A (odd), Nos 2 to 8 (even), and Nos 16 to 20 (even), along with No 4 Meal Market, with No 1 being of local interest.
