Description

SE 3171 RIPON MARKET PLACE 1/43 (north side) 6.5.70

Nos 17, 17A and 18 GV II

Late C17. White-washed brick. Hipped and sprocketed slate roof, pantiled to rear. Two storeys and attics. Projecting moulded eaves cornice. Part-moulded brick band visible on Queen Street side. Six first floor windows (and 2 more blocked) with later sashes and casements, but contemporary openings. Mid C19 shopfronts with some moulded wooden ornament. Rear has 2 projecting wings, with brick tumbled gables.

Interior. Two contemporary oak staircases, the larger one at the east and (inside No 17). Both have closed strings, plain newels with ball finials (cf The Old Deanery, Minster Road, perhaps-built not long after the Restoration), and sturdy turned balusters. South-east first floor room has contemporary plaster ceiling with a diamond-shaped centrepiece framing the relief of a pelican. This, and the rather larger staircase, suggest that the east end was the upper end of the house, and the west end was probably the service end. Some early C19 cast iron fireplaces.
