Description
26 Market Street is a mid-18th century building that stands two storeys high with an attic and features four windows. The exterior is made of painted brick and has chamfered stone quoins, with plat bands at both the ground and first floors. The roof is slate with coped verges, and there are brick chimneys topped with stucco. The tall sash windows are adorned with rusticated flat arches and later glazing. The building has two hipped gabled dormers, each with sash windows.
Access to the entrance is through an annexe on the right, which is recessed and supported by Doric columns. The door consists of eight raised and fielded panels. To the right of the entrance, there are quoins leading to outhouses and a stable block. The stables and offices, located to the northwest of the house, create a small courtyard and are accessed from Cowgarth; they are stone-built and painted white.
Inside, the ground floor retains much of the original panelling from the former parlour on the north side, despite some modern alterations. This area features a dentil cornice, a later marble fireplace with a panel above, and fluted Ionic pilasters that support a pulvinated frieze. The staircase has turned bannisters.
The building is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 26 (even), with Nos 2 and 10 to 16 noted for their local interest.
