MARKET STREET 1. (South West Side) 5334 No 26 NY 9364 1/25

  1. Mid C18. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows. Painted brick with chamfered stone quoins. Plat bands to ground and 1st floors. Coped verges to slate roof; brick chimneys with stucco capping. Tall sash windows with rusticated flat arches and later glazing. 2 hipped gabled dormers with sash windows. Entrance via annexe to right-recessed with Doric columns. Door has 8 raised and fielded panels. Quoins to outhouses and stable block to right of entrance. The stables, offices etc of the house are to the north west forming a small courtyard and entered from Cowgarth. They are stone built and painted white. The interior on the ground floor retains on the north side despite modern 'horizontalization' most of the panelling of the former parlour with a dentil cornice. Later marble fireplace with a panel above, flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters supporting pulvinated frieze. Turned bannisters to stairs.

Nos 2 to 26 (even) form a group, of which Nos 2 and 10 to 16 are of local interest.
