Description
1 Hencotes is a mid-18th century building featuring later additions. It is two storeys high with three windows and is constructed of painted brick, accented by stone side piers, a modillion cornice, and decorative head and cill bands with a central feature. The building has a brick parapet and first-floor glazing bar sash windows, with tripartite windows at the sides. The central first-floor window is adorned with a pulvinated frieze, hipped architrave, and apron. On the ground floor, there are two later three-light bays with stopped chamfer reveals, late glazed sash windows, and blocking courses. The former central entrance has been replaced by a pedimented blind three-light window with sash rebates. The gable ends feature brick chimneys with bands and modillion capping. At the rear, there is a three-window gabled annexe with glazing bar sash windows, tripartite in the centre, and kneelers at the gable. To the left, there is a round-headed doorway with a spoked fanlight and a cross panelled door. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 43 (odd) Hencotes, along with Temperley Place (Nos 1 to 5) and surrounding walls, with certain other nearby properties noted for their local interest.
