Description

St Wilfrid's Gateway, also known as The Priory Gatehouse, dates back to around 1160. Originally a two-storey ashlar gatehouse, it has been altered to feature a three-bay arched gateway. The upper storey and vaults were removed in the early 19th century for a more picturesque appearance, although some wall ribs and corbels still remain. The gateway features round arches that span the road, with piers located at the first bay from the north. The structure is scheduled as an ancient monument. The Priory Gatehouse, along with No 3 Church Row and Nos 2 to 6 (even) Market Street, forms a group, with Nos 2 and 8 to 16 (even) Market Street also being of local interest.
