Description

Hexham House is a Grade II* listed building dated 1723, featuring later wings. The main garden front faces southwest and consists of three storeys with five windows, flanked by two-storey wings that each have two windows. The structure is built of ashlar stone with quoins on the sides of the main block, the center bay, and the southeast wing. It has a moulded string course above the first and ground floors, a cornice, and a parapet, along with stone chimneys. The windows are glazing bar sash types. A projecting porch supported by piers features a reeded door surround leading to a glazed door. Inscribed on the lintel above this door are "T.A." over "Has Aedes struxit" over "1723". Inside, there are panelled rooms facing the garden, and the left-hand wing is recessed and constructed of rubble with some alterations on the ground floor. The right-hand (southeast) wing, built of ashlar around 1840, includes a cornice and blocking course, and features rich plasterwork inside, including a coved ceiling in the garden front room.

The street front shows the wings projecting, with the right-hand wing (northwest) being brick-built and connected to the center by a narrow one-window annexe. This wing also has a kidney-shaped lead rainwater head with a mask in relief and a box above displaying the arms of Durham Abbey. The southeast wing is made of ashlar, while the center section is also ashlar with three windows featuring raised surrounds, a cornice, and a parapet. There is a closed porch with a six-panel door in the center.

Hexham House, along with Nos 2 to 8 (even) and the wall to the bowling green, forms a group.
