Description

The lychgate and adjoining stile, fence, and gate are located approximately 45 meters south-west of the Church of St Mary in Nunthorpe. This structure, which serves as a war memorial, was designed by Leslie Moore in 1947, with the woodwork completed by Thompson from Kilburn. It is constructed from snecked rockfaced sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has plain clay tiled roofs.

The lychgate includes angle buttresses and segmental-pointed openings created by the side walls and the arched brace of the roof. The south opening is fitted with panelled two-leaf oak gates that are accessed by two steps. The gables have moulded cusped bargeboards, with moulded arched-braced ties, wall posts, and crownposts that support the collars. The roof is sprocketed at the eaves.

The adjoining stile has three steps on either side, with diagonally-braced posts that have tapered heads and shaped finials. There is a three-bay post-and-rail fence with braced diamond rails, and a gate featuring lattice infill, a moulded and inscribed top rail, and inscribed round-topped gateposts at the left end of the fence. A similar one-bay section of fence is attached to the left gatepost.

Inside the lychgate, the walls are made of ashlar, and there are wooden benches, chamfered wall plates, and inscribed tablets that commemorate those who fell in World War II. The stile, fence, and gate are dedicated to the memory of Margaret and Clifford Brunton, who died in 1936 and 1951, respectively. This structure is included for its group value.
