Description
The lychgate to the Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed structure built from local rubble stonework and topped with a slate roof. It features a broad gable over a narrow passage that runs between two low store rooms, which were likely used for a bier and gravedigger's equipment. The front of the lychgate has a pointed arch that holds iron gates, with double boarded timber doors on either side, set beneath monolithic stone lintels. The facade extends on both sides to form part of the churchyard wall.
Inside, the passageway is high with exposed rafters and does not have a rear gate. The internal walls are rendered, but there are cutaway panels that reveal two inscribed stones. One stone commemorates the building of the lychgate in 1847 by Reverend G Owen MA, while the other stone is inscribed with WE HR WARDns / 1747.
