Description

No. 17 Elvet Bridge is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the early 19th century. The rear of the building, which is below street level, features a coursed squared sandstone elevation that rises to the riverside level. The main house is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings, some of which have been painted. The shop front, added around 1930, includes a granite plinth and showcases an Art Deco style with black glass and chrome elements. The street elevation consists of three storeys and two bays. The shop has a plain plinth and a window framed with a surround that includes a top light made of wave-patterned etched glass. Large, high-relief chrome letters adorn the fascia and gutter cornice. The left end chimney has been renewed, and the interior features ashlar walls in the basement.
