Description
No. 18 Elvet Bridge is a Grade I listed building that now functions as a shop but incorporates the House of Correction in its cellar, which extends into the land arch of Elvet Bridge. The bridge is medieval, the prison dates back to 1632, and the house and shop were constructed later in the 19th century. The House of Correction features coursed squared sandstone, while the shop has an ashlar ground floor with yellow Flemish bond brick and ashlar dressings above, topped by a Welsh slate roof.
The building has a street-facing elevation of three storeys and four bays, with the left bay being narrower. The arcaded ground floor includes three-panelled doors in the end bays and a recessed half-glazed central shop door. Round or elliptical arches above the windows and entrances feature upper lights with glazing bars. The bays are defined by Tuscan pilasters, paired at the right end, beneath an entablature with a dentilled cornice. The upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars, flat brick arches, and projecting stone sills, with the top left window being blind. A stone eaves band and gutter cornice complete the exterior.
The interior of the House of Correction includes an elliptical brick arch over a wrought iron grille and a heavy wood door. The land arch of Elvet Bridge has cells built into it, featuring a two-centred arch with five flat ribs that extend under the road surface.
